          A Nonprofit Organization

          Providing Assistance to Foster Children

Most of us are blessed with a loving family, a comfortable home, and some indulgences in life. However, there are children in our community who are not as lucky as we are. This is where Garrett’s Place comes in. We are a nonprofit organization in Bessemer, AL that aims to provide free clothes, toys, books, and other items to foster children. Our foundation also plans to offer job opportunities to youth who are about to leave the system.

          About Our Nonprofit Organization

Our nonprofit organization started when Paula Tarwater felt a void after the death of her middle son, and with her sons, Joshua and Matthew, done with her mothering them. Since she has always loved taking care of children, Paula, with the support of her husband, David Tarwater, general manager of the Birmingham Terminal Railway and the Alabama Warrior Railway, decided to turn that feeling of emptiness into something that can make a positive impact in their community.

The couple decided to take some classes and become foster parents. They now have adopted two of their foster children, and is planning to adopt twins soon. Looking after these children have provided them with a glimpse of what they truly need. With this in mind, they are preparing two shops to help those in foster care to gain a sense of normalcy and work skills.

With social services on board supporting the project, and with people throughout the community already prepared to donate, the Tarwaters has 501 (c)(3) status.
